Sayyiduna Safinah رضي الله عنه narrated: "The Prophet ﷺ would perform Wudhu with a Mudd, and he would perform Ghusl with a Sa." (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 56)
One mudd equates to approximately 775ml. As can be seen from the hadith above, as well as many other similar narrations, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform ablution with a mudd full of water.
Al-Mudd al-Nabawiyya allows us to see exactly how much water the Prophet ﷺ used for his wudhu.
The Al-Mudd: Worship Without Waste Program we aim and seek Allah's pleasure and to adhere to the Sunnah, and follow the way of the Salaf in regards to Creed and Actions. As a daily ritual of purification, Wudhu is a part of worship for Muslims globally. It is the key to purification before salah, hence it is essential to follow the Sunnah is this regard.
The Al-Mudd: Worship Without Waste Program aims to encourage the Muslimeen (starting with ourselves) to reduce water waste when making wudhu. Allah states in His Noble Book, in Suratal Al-Araf, “O Children of Adam! Dress properly whenever you are at worship. Eat and drink, but do not waste. Surely He does not like the wasteful.” (Al'Araf, ayat 31)
Abdullah ibn Amr رضي الله عنه reported: The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ passed by Sa’d (ibn Waqas) رضي الله عنهwhile he was performing ablution. The Prophet ﷺ said, “What is this extravagance?” Sa’d said, “Is there extravagance with water in ablution?” The Prophetﷺ said, “Yes, even if you were on the banks of a flowing river.” Source: Musnad Aḥmad 7065
It is narrated on the authority of Amir al-Mu'minin (Leader of the Believers), Abu Hafs 'Umar bin al-Khattab رضي الله عنه, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say,
"Actions are according to intentions, and everyone will get what was intended.
With 1.9 billion Muslims globally the issue of water usage and waste whilst making wudu is a known problem, so much so, reminders signs are posted in the ablution areas and water reduction faucets/taps have been installed in the masajid across the world. This is matter requires better awareness and knowledge of what the Quran and Sunnah commands to change our behavior away from water wastage.
The question arises, how are the Muslims around the world turning on the tap (full blast, high, medium, low level) for wudhu? Hence the purpose for this survey- Wudhu Water Usage Survey is only way to find out, is to ask as many Muslims as possible, hence the purpose of this survey is to collect data.
Your feedback is important . The survey is only 6 questions. Your response will be used to compare and contrast wudhu habits and published in the near future. Furthermore, it is our intention to collaborate with Islamic Ministries in majority Muslims countries to reach a larger audience globally using surveys and work toward viable toward solutions.
In our day and age, the habits to waste have unfortunately become common place. Occasionally the Imam or community leader gives a khutbah or talk about water waste to create awareness to remind the Muslims. Part of the solution is to bring about awareness through programs such as Al-Mudd-Worship Without Waste and to educate ourselves families.
It is important to start by reminding ourselves that Allah does not like the wastefulness and adhere to advice of the Prophet ﷺ given to Sa'd ibn Waqqas رضي الله عنه. This means we need to be mindful regarding how we turn on the tap, is it on low, medium, high, or full blast? The current water faucets/taps do add value, to reduce water wastage. Water is a blessing and should not be squandered.
With Allah's Permission and aid we pray and hope to develop an innovative product that will make it easy to integrate technology and revive the sunnah of using almudd.
The first step is to take the survey! What are you waiting for...Bismillah.
